Hot on the heels of the cannabis discussion....

There are lots of IGS pupils to be seen before and after school and at lunchtime smoking on Crossbeck Road and on the alley leading along Mount Pleasant.

I wonder if the school is aware of this, and from what age it is legal, and if it isn't legal why they don't do something about it.

I once accosted a group of smoking IGS pupils and described a relative's recent death from cancer to them. It was really weird - they put out their cigarettes and looked quite alarmed - I suppose the death, and the relative's regrets, were fresh in my mind and so I sounded convincing - I don't think I'd try it again! But they didn't swear at me or anything - it was almost like they wanted someone to step in and stop them.

Permanent exclusion for all of them, particularly if caught with a fag packet in their pocket - intent to supply innit?

That'll learn 'em.

Just wondering why you think it's the school's issue as the children are outside of the school? The school has no jurisdiction over the what the pupils do whilst they are not in the school.

As mcnab says, this is an issue for the parents to deal with.

But well done for putting the fear of god into them.

Interesting fact for the day:
Between the ages of 5-16 (school age) a child only spends approximately 20% of their waking hours in school.

Lindsay - contact the school and let them know when it happens - tell them what colour tie the children are wearing (they will then know the year group).

I have spoken to the school when we had a rash of smoking/drinking/vandalism incidents at the back of Crossbeck Road. Mr Moosey - sorry to contradict you but the school where very concerned by their pupils behaviour "out of school time" ie at lunch and walking home from school. The pupils are representing the school at these times and even though not on school property the school was very helpful in deterring anti social behaviour.

I'm not saying that the school can't have its influence, but it just annoys me when people assume that the school has all the responsibility to sort out social issues.
Hence the waking hours stats which I recollect from an essay I wrote at uni.
Parents seem to abdicate all responsibility for the welfare of their kids, expecting the school to do it for them.
School is for teaching and learning the stuff that can't be taught or learnt at home, this doesn't include things such as manners, respect etc in my book.

On a similar vein, Mrs Moose happened to be watching something about obese kids t'other day. I can't watch thses things as I end up shouting at the TV - usually something on the lines of - "Have you no bl00dy common sense!"
*sigh*

Perzackerly.

Poor diet/too much food, no exercise == Fat B4st4rd

Good diet/sensible portions, exercise == lean mean pulling machine

Although with me it's ok diet (too many sausages)/large portions/too much beer but lots of exercise == staving off the pot belly, but still quick over the moors! Just a bit more huff and puff on the uphills than I should be

V. interesting. Whatever I do I will remember that I'll probably be trying and failing to stop at least one of my children from smoking in a decade or so.....

I remember my parents giving me a drag on a fag when I was in my late teens, which put me off smoking for about 5 years. Unfortunatley smoking = cool (in the eyes of teenagers)
