I must say that, in general, I've noticed more pavement dogshit in ilkley recently. Perhaps in the last couple of months or so.

I suggest a policy of increased vigilance as a result.

This is the story of simple folk who believe the earth is flat, especially where their Super Pooch sits and c**ps.

For many hundred years leather workers used fallout from the canine species to soften leather. Some products worn by Royalty and the nobility started life at the bottom of a bucket. At least parts did. Kid gloves prized by aristocratic ladies owed their softness and colour to dog turds. It is fair to assume the majority of Victorian ladies knew nothing of the intricacies which went into producing their kid gloves. Nor what tanners used to make leather soft and supple. It is also a fair bet, if they did find out, sales of smelling salts would skyrocket.

In days of yore, men and boys were employed to collect that which Wharfedale has in ever increasing amounts. Dog phoowy to put it bluntly! Victorian tanneries put it to good use in softening leather, some of which became kid gloves worn by Victorian ladies in great number. Strange how, in an era of organic farming and recycling, no one has found another use for the mountains of leather softener which threatens to engulf parts of Britain.

Those who cannot remember the past, should have taken more interest in their history lessons. Maybe then the problems we have today would not be in evidence to such extremes. Alternatively, owners not wishing to soil their hands or reputations could always resort to using large corks. For their animals, that is! Considering this Governments wish to help rural communities, the plight of the above town is ripe for exploitation on a grand scale.

Dogs.

For every Greyhound kept by any person, whether his property or not, £1. For every other species of dog, where more than one is kept, 14 shillings. And any person who shall inhabit any dwellinghouse, assessed to any of the duties on inhabited houses, or on windows or lights, and shall keep one dog and no more, not being of the above description, 8 shillings for such dog. But this duty is not to extend to dogs not six months old: the proof of which lies with the owner, on appeal to the commissioners. Persons compounding for their hounds, to be charged £36.

Given the charges are over 179 years ago present day owners are getting off very lightly. Maybe if dog owners paid modern equivalents to the above rates, we wouldn’t have the problems in our parks, open spaces and footpaths. But not many can remember 1823.

To be continued...................

Walking on the lower areas of the Moor can often be a Dog **** minefield - I've often wondered why the signs do not include a fine for dog fouling, is that because it's on common land? Anyone know?

I gather so. However it would appear plans are afoot - ooops - to have it changed. DEFRA are being a bit coy about who is doing what and where again. Perhaps Bertie may have heard something from the Dark Side.

Those in power should take a works outing on ilkley Moor and see how bad it really is. One can't blame the dogs. They are only doing what should come natural. I gather the new leader of Ilkley Parish Council counted over thirty piles of that which turns you green on the track to White Wells. Only thirty! He should go when the ladies who drive decend on the area. Ladies who drive so-called 4x4z that is.

The old lemon comes out about sheep and horse droppings. Apart from Icelandic ponies, I don't think there are any carnivorous herbivours in Ilkley. Just off post - I see the gremlin is still with us - back again.

I think there may be added complications as ilkley Moor is designated as an Urban Common. There are enough legal complexities to keep the barristers in four star lunches for the next decade!

You know the old Yorkshire saying mac.monkey - where there's muck there's money - perhaps those who walk their mutts and don't pick it up, are afraid of losing their dosh when they bend over. I reckon those piles are ripe for revenue if only them over t'ill would think latteraly.

I wish those who leave their small black bags full of dog excrement in our hedge would cease. Said hedge will end up looking like Leeds City Centre did a couple of weeks ago!

Was talking to a Senior Officer in BMDC about the problem today. They tried to point out it wasn't within their council's interest to provide suitable receptacles. I asked why Leeds Council found it able to do as much? They are going to look into provision of, however the stink may be more appropriate to stick under DEFRA's nose.
