As some of you have already seen I have a new poll running about ilkley Carnival and if you would be happy to see it go or not? I may not have attended it for a few years, but I still think it's great a town of our relatively small size puts on such a show. Plus it's great for the kids. Although the carnival itself is a bit 'blink and you miss it', it's still nice to get the streets filled and let the cars sit and wait outside the town (oh wait the traffic lights do that every day).
According to the Gazette 2008 may have been the last one, due to lack of volunteers. Despite a huge number of people attended non of it matters because nobody wants to help organise it. So are we really that bothered? So far the Poll suggest we are, but if that's the case then why is nobody signing up to help? Answers on a forum posted to im.com

Perhaps the possible demise answers the question. From my own experience in this town folk will not volunteer, they prefer to let the usual small groups slog their guts out for the rest. That's one of the reasons we no longer have a Chamber of Trade. We lost an Archery Club because of much the same. Considering the number of folk who live near our Millennium Green one would have thought they would volunteer too. But no, apart, so I believe from a couple of new ones. Sorry to sound down on this but unless we have a change and a BIG change, a lot of hard work will become fruitless.

I would be sad to see the carnival go, I remember it from when I was a child and when I moved back here it was the one thing I was looking forward to the most. It's not as good as it used to be though, remember when the schools all made floats? now a lot of them just seem to walk, and the things going on down in the field aren't really enough to keep people there. I was highly disappointed this year, especially with the clown act.
Imor, I would love to volunteer to help around the Millennium Green, I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands and knees though so find it hard to hold anything for very long without it hurting but I can usually push past that and help out.
